This week's question is:
Q: Have you ever read a book that you thought you would hate — ? Did you end up hating it? Did you end up loving it? Or would you never do that?
The only books I really have hated have been required reading. For instance, in middle school we had to read The Kay. I really hated this book. Plus, it took the class a month to finish the book. Actually, I got into a lot of trouble because I expressed my dislike of the book to my teacher - not the best idea I ever had.
As for books I choose for myself - either for the blog or just to read for fun - I pick out books that I know I will probably like that are in my genre. There was a book that my sister wanted me to read that she loved from an author I liked, but this particular book was so preachy and just infuriating. I still get angry thinking about it. So I guess my answer is that I rarely hate a book, but it happens.
What about you? Have you ever hated a book?
Hey! Thanks for stopping by earlier today! What's the preachy book, though? I'm really curious!

The book is called The Atonement Child by Francine Rivers. I loved some of her other books especially the Mark of the Lion books, but this one was just...ugh! Too much inacurate facts i.e. that the morning after pill is the abortion pill. It just rubbed me the wrong way.

I agree sometimes school books are not interesting. I didn't like reading The Scarlet Letter.

I didn't love the Scarlet Letter the first time I read it either. But Hawthorn is an aquired taste.

I've never heard of that one, but yes required reading usually sucks! (The Crucible or The Old Man & the Sea anyone?)

I love the Cruicible, but I did my thesis on the Salem Witch Trials so I am a little biased. I can't stand the Old Man and the Sea and I had to teach it to my eighth graders - I think we both suffered, lol!

I agree with you Krista! Most books that I remember knowing I wouldn't like were required reading in school (Lord of the Flies). I pick the books I read because I think I'm going to enjoy them. If you're not reading for enjoyment then why bother?
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by this week and the follow :D I'm following you back via GFC.

Hi Krista! So true! Required reading has ruined quite a few books for me (Great Gatsby, Heart of Darkness, Dante's Inferno). Maybe I should give them a second chance. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog. I am following you back. Excited to read your reviews!

Krista, I'm there with you! But I think it's unfair you got in trouble for simply expressing your opinion!! I'm a teacher myself and I have a ton of kids on a daily basis who tell me they hate Spanish, and I just kind of look at them and shrug. It's not for everyone. :)

Teachers, what do they know, lol. I still remember the shocked faces mine used to make whenever I would criticize a scene in a book. Thanks for stopping by my FF. New follower :)
ReplyDeleteI agree, the books I was required to read were always the ones I didn't like. The over-analyzing of everything annoyed me!
