Action, adventure, magic, and page melting scenes are what awaits in Crimson Flames. Abby is back and better than ever! In Crimson Groves Abby learned that she is not quite "normal" and she is bound and determined to figure out what that means. She was turned into a vampire (against her will - BTW) and then learned that she has powers- and that she is the only one of her type. Not to mention the people who want her dead or to use her powers for themselves. Abby's journey of self-discovery reveals many things not only about herself, but about those around her. I love that she is able to take whatever is thrown at her; she is one of my favorite female heroines - think Lara Croft and Selene from Underworld - yeah, she is that cool!

In CG, Abby learned that Tyler, her human friend that she is in love with, betrayed her multiple times and was working for Bronx, the evil vampire that turned Abby. He keeps insisting that he is innocent and runs. I don't like Tyler and never really did and finally Abby can see him for who he is and let him go and move on. With the help of Stone and Tristan, she attempts to find answers from the Vampire Council. Abby is asked by the almighty Vampire Council to help them fight against the Resistance (the rogues Bronx was with). Abby is not sure what to do or if she should get in the middle of a war, but they put her in the middle and she is constantly trying to stay alive because she has the power to defeat the Resistance, like it or not.

However, meeting with the Council isn't all bad; Abby is reconnected with her mother's spirit through an Elder on the Council. Although Abby isn't sure about trusting her, but she realizes that her mom only wants to help her and show her her true potential. Not only does she meet her mom, but Trace is back in the picture *swoon* and she finds herself attracted to him, but does not jump into his arms right away. I really love Trace, he is patient and kind and so hot! Abby is on a journey to find out who she is and she takes her time and learns who is trustworthy and who is not. I commend her for wanting to do things on her own and not be rescued by a man even if they are all sexy men who are ready to help her whenever...

I have read all of Ashley Robertson's books and she is a wonderful writer. I can see the growth and maturity in her writing between Crimson Groves and Crimson Flames. She is able to create stories that take on so many levels and clearly ties everything together. There is never a dull moment in Crimson Flames and I didn't want it to end. I love this series and anyone who likes vampires, magic, hot men, and a strong female will love this book. There are enough twists and turns to keep you guessing and the suspense will keep you on the edge of your seat. I can't wait to see what Abby will do next - there will be a third book, right??

1. First, a quickie: give us the genre of your Crimson series and a tagline in 30 words or less.
A MUST READ paranormal romance series.
2. What inspired you to write the Crimson series, specifically?
I’ve always loved vampires so when Abby kept pestering me with her unique story, I knew I needed to type it up right away.
3. Give us an interesting fun fact or a few about your latest book Crimson Flames.
There’s more ass kicking, more hot-n-spicy romance, and lots of action-packed scenes.

4. Who is your favorite character in the series thus far? Why? Is it the same character from both books? Currently my fave character is Abby. She’s stronger now that she’s embraced the fact that she’s a vampire hybrid and she isn’t taking any more crap from anyone. She’s made some tough decisions that could end up getting her killed, but she doesn’t let her fear stand in the way of doing what’s right. I’m very proud of how Abby has become more confident in herself and her powers, and she’s gotten a lot feistier too.

5. Who is your least favorite character? Has it changed from book one to book two??
In both books, Tyler has driven me absolutely crazy. I constantly want to kick his ass.

6. What books and authors have most influenced your life and writing?
Richelle Mead, Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series, Karen Marie Moning, Dean Koontz, Laurell K. Hamilton, Kresley Cole’s Arcana series, Nalini Singh

7. If you could be a supernatural, what kind would you be and why?
Definitely a vampire. Simply because I’m obsessed with them.
8. If you could change ONE thing about your novel Crimson Flames, what would it be? Why?
I’m really happy with the way Crimson Flames turned out. However, there were a few things about Crimson Groves that bothered me and I’m working with my editor to make those changes and re-release the new version next month (April 2013)

9. What is the hardest part of writing?
Editing.

10. Do you have any tips for readers or advice for other writers trying to get published?
I could go on forever here and totally make this question a guest blog post. But in an effort to keep things short, here are a few important bullet points that are a MUST:

1. Finish your manuscript! Whether you want to publish traditionally or self-pub, you’ve got to have a completed book on your hands before you can do anything else.

2. Hire a professional editor! Not your friend! You want someone that will shoot straight with you and not give a damn if they hurt your feelings because at the end of the day, you want your book as good as it can be for your readers, right? I use Stephen Delaney with Close Reader Editing Services and he’s pretty badass. 

3. If you’re not a graphic designer and can’t manipulate artwork on a computer, then hire a cover designer! People really do judge a book by its cover, so you need it to look as good on the outside as it is on the inside. I use Claudia with Phatpuppyart.com and she can do some pretty amazing things with graphics.

I absolutely love this book! I stayed up all night reading and could not bring myself to go to bed without knowing the end. It has been a long time since I have become so engrossed in a book. I received Walking in the Shadows as an ARR through Goodreads and didn't have any idea what I was picking up. I thought the synopsis looked interesting and I was blown away! The plot is intriguing and compelling, the drama is intense, and the romance is steamy in a YA way. This book has so many layers and deals with many issues such as morality, ethics, death, friendship, and love.

The Romance: Abigail - or Vera, as she is now known - lost her parents when she was only 16. Instead of going to live with her Godparents, she chose to make it on her own and became legally emancipated. So when she met Tad, a recently graduated college student, it was no wonder why he thought she was older than 17. And Abbi didn't correct his assumption; something she now is kicking herself for because he is now her high school British English teacher. Talk about awkward! He is furious and she is devastated because she will lose him too. But their feelings for each other are too strong and despite the rational idea of letting one another go, they give in to their deliciously forbidden and taboo relationship. I love the chemistry between Abbi and Tad, especially in the classroom when they are fighting their feelings. Tad isn't that much older than Abbi (who turns 18 two weeks into the semester) and has a bit of a temper like a teenage boy which emerges at the best times - Tad1, Mike:0. I love that Tad tries to act like a knight-in-shining-armour. He is Abbi's other half and without him she never quite feels safe.

The Mystery: The teachers have all been told of Abbi's living circumstances and that her parents were killed in a car crash, but that isn't actually the truth. In reality they were murdered by Vampires...well, a serial killer who thinks they are a  vampire. Really, they are taking their love of the popular vampire book, Crimson Reign, to an extreme. Hoping for a new start (and a way to hide), Abbi moved from her home town to Amherst, MA and actually started to see light at the end of the tunnel. She had a best friend, a "boyfriend", a job, and had her Godparents nearby. But then on the night of the Winter Formal, Abbi found another victim of the serial killer and her life is catapulted back into a state of fear. I love the whole idea of a serial killer who mimics a super popular vampire series. And I love the subtle tie-ins to an actual popular vampire series. It made the whole story very believable in that aspect because people love to become something else - something with more power than they themselves as humans posses.

The plot of Walking in the Shadows is fueled by the characters' emotions. I think this is why I didn't find the whole teacher-student relationship to be a bad thing. They love each other and think the same and really are on the same level even though they are a few years apart. Then there are Abbi's dreams about her father. I found myself in tears after her dreams hearing his voice and running to him only having him become a monster and kill her! I felt everything that Abbi felt: my heart was continually broken, I was in fear for my life and angry, I was happy and laughing, and I was in love. Abbi is not the best friend a person could have, but Jaz (her new and only friend) stood by her even when she found out that she had been lied to on many occasions. The only thing that I did not like was the skipping of time. We go from one day to the next without any mention of the time that had passed and I desperately wanted that time filled in!

I found myself completely entranced by Cassandra Giovanni's novel Walking in the Shadows. Normally, I like reading books that can stand alone, but in this case I want more. I really want to read more about Tad and Abbi's relationship and I want to read Crimson Reign and see what the fuss is all about. The characters were written well and are interesting - even if some were slightly two dimensional. Overall, I think that Abbi's journey holds more than just finding her parent's killer and having a boyfriend. This is a book about finding love and learning to accept the love given in return whether it is from a lover, a friend, or family.

The Novel Behind the Novel: Crimson Reign

Walking in the Shadows is a book based off of events caused by another book—the Crimson Reign Saga. This saga of vampire novels is based off of two warring covens with differing ideals and the fight over a vampire that has converted from one coven to the other. The idea of the Crimson Reigncame from the real life events that spurred the vampire phenomena—the books that inspired people to become over the top obsessed. I’ve seen people with Team Edward tattooed on their bodies, which was scary enough on its own. It really got me thinking about how far obsessions can go, so I combined the mind of a serial killer with the mind of a person who is so obsessed with a fictional item that they get it tattooed on their body forever. Thus, the Crimson Reign Saga was born, but I knew my character would never read the novels so how could I really understand the depth that created the nightmare that became Vera/Abbi’s life? It seemed natural to me to write some scenes from the first novel in the saga, and to outline the rest of the series as well. It helped me to gain an understanding of the characters that inspired the murders—the bad characters, the vampires that believed that they should have the power over humans. Seeing I have these files sitting in a folder labeled “Unfinished: Never to be finished”, I might as well share them with you. Please keep in mind that the Crimson Reign novels were never meant to be seen and were written to imitate a style which is not mine. They have a bit of over the top vampire features that border on being ridiculous—but if you like it and you want more…I might oblige.

“Time to hunt,” Evan said, clapping his hands together, his sharp retractable incisor teeth protruding.
Faye leaned up on her tip toes and kissed his neck. “Let’s.”
“I’m good,” I replied looking back down at the book I was reading. We weren’t nocturnal and I wasn’t a fan of night feeding.
“Not hungry?” Evan asked as he leaned down and put his face in front of mine.
“Not in the least,” I said, my voice sounding meeker than the ferocity I felt.
He struck the book from my hand and grabbed me by the shoulder hard enough to bruise as he yelled, “What’s wrong with you lately?”
I slapped his hand away. “You aren’t the boss of me Evan.”
“I’m the leader of this coven whether or not you like it,” he hissed, shaking his arm. There was no doubt in my mind that I had bruised him back and that I had bruised his ego, too.
“I don’t,” I retorted in a matter of fact voice. Being a vampire was so dramatic sometimes.
“And what pray tell would you do about it? Leave?” Faye teased, dancing in front of Evan and running her hands across his chest, “I think not.”
She had her back to me now as she rubbed her body against his and then bit his lip. I rolled my eyes as I tried to look away from them. My life was filled with these awkward moments 99% of the time. I didn’t have a mate and they felt the need to rub it in my face, or complain about it. Either way I wasn’t in the mood for their nasty feeding and make-out fest.
“I think you need a mate,” Evan commented in between kisses with her.
“Don’t you dare try to convince Collin into trying to seduce me again,” I said, thinking of the other single coven member. They had chosen him for me, and weren’t very pleased when I decided he was almost as much the scum of the earth as they were; as we were.
“Then come feed, you can’t starve forever,” Faye begged with sweet pout. It was fake though, she really didn’t care.
“I’m good,” I repeated.
“Why are you so stubborn? They deserve what’s coming to them. This is what we were put here to do. They are our prey. God put us here to do this,” Evan explained forcefully.
I watched as Collin, Aria and Leo entered the room ready for the hunt.
“Is she getting a conscience again?”Aria guessed, flipping her curly golden locks.
“I don’t like that theory,” Evan growled as he turned on Aria and pushed her to the wall. “So keep your opinions to yourself.”
“She’s just like the Gray’s. Sorry excuses for vampires,” Aria retorted, pushing back against Evan. She was weaker than me, though and couldn’t free herself from his grip.
“Us equal to the humans?” Collin spat with his black eyes narrowed on me.
“Live among humans?” Leo added as he pulled Evan off of Aria. They acted like beasts, no wonder we couldn’t live among humans. They would all be running for their lives—too bad they wouldn’t get far.
“The Grays live with them?” I asked, jumping over the couch and grabbing my book of the floor.
“You already act like one—reading. What a waste of time,” Leo commented as he sniffed Aria’s hair before kissing it.
We were supposed to be more evolved than the humans, yet we acted like this. I felt the bile rising under the pale skin of my throat. That was the reason I couldn’t feed; these idiots made me nauseous with their sexual behaviors and lack of any sort of inhibition.
“You’re coming with us whether or not you like it,” Evan demanded before grabbing me by my arm and throwing me over his shoulder. His finger dug into my collar bone, and I couldn’t fight him. He knew it was the only way I wouldn’t.

I knew I couldn’t run from them forever. They would fine me, not because they cared but for their own selfish motives. My only way out was this; I would do it before they could find me. I lay down and stared up at the stars and kissed them goodbye with one slice of each pale wrist. The metallic stench was overwhelming. It called me to feed, but it would do nothing to save me now. I watched the pink veins beginning to flow forward as the blood cycled towards the deep cuts and out. I let my wrists lay in the cool crimson puddles and tried to forget the pain. I hoped there was a God to save me at the other end of this.
“What the hell are you doing?” a deep, intoxicating voice interrupted.
“Finding a way out—away from them,” I replied as I watched his face come into view over me. It was blurred by the moon that was making a halo over his head. I had thought the stench of the freshly manure covered field would hide my blood from other vampires.
“Why?” he pried as his voice softened.
His face focused through the blur of the moon and I found myself staring into the sterling eyes of Colby Gray. He was a name and face I knew but a voice I had never heard.
“We’re beasts, diabolical beasts. I can’t do it anymore,” I choked out in a rasp whisper. I knew that his strong ears would be the only thing that could hear my weakened voice. It was working; I was dying, finally.
“They’re beasts, you don’t have to be,”he murmured as he swept me into his arms.
“I’m done for already,” I said. I could hear my heartbeat fading from a thump to a pitter. Yes, that much closer to never having to kill again.
“We’ll save you—?”
“Nara Cabe,” I managed with a slurred voice, the words painfully coming as my head lolled against his shoulder.
“Nara Gray now,” he replied, brushing a tear away from my face. My body was numb, but his cool finger was like an electric shock. I fought hard against the weakness in my limbs as he ran faster and faster. His face was desperate, and I could tell he didn’t know if they could save me. I wished I had known they would have been willing to save me. The Grays—the coven mine despised so much. The one I would now become if I could only convince my heart to stop beating the life out of itself.

Cassandra Giovanni is an avid writer of young adult novels and can't wait to share her work with you. The genres of her novels include dystopian, paranormal, mystery and romance all aimed at appealing to adults and young adults alike. Her personal goal with her writing is to show the reader the character's stories through their dialogue and actions instead of just telling the reader what is happening. She began writing at a very young age, in fact from the moment she could draw she was telling stories that way. At age seven she won a contest in American Girl Doll to have a chapter she had written published. From that point on she was always writing, if not on paper than in her head. In May 2012 she published her first novel, In Between Seasons, which demonstrated her unique writing style and approach to the genre of post-apocalyptic fiction. I am a bit of a Historical Fiction junkie especially when it comes to Gothic and Paranormal Historical Fiction. Taking place during the War of the Roses, Descent of Blood is essentially a Vampire love story. I love being swept back in time and the author Elizabeth Marx does this beautifully. The story revolves around a Vampire prince, Severian Pearce, who has been busy fighting a war and aiding King Henry. When he happens upon a young woman his whole life changes and his heart - literally and figuratively - are immediately seized by Meridian. Her blood, unlike other humans, does not have a scent which means a great many things in Vampire culture, and he becomes enraptured with longing for this spunky girl who nearly killed him. And despite her objections and denials, Meridian feels the longing too. This is an aspect of The Red Veil - an attraction that will continue to increase to the point of madness if not acted upon. However, Meridian is bound for the church and has been entrusted to deliver a relic that could change the face of the war and Vampires forever.

Elizabeth Marx has written a book that immediately captured my interest and I could not get enough of the relationship between Severian and Meridian. (BTW - I love their names!) Severian is a swoon worthy hunky vampire with an attitude. Meridian is an innocent girl, but is also strong and very stubborn. When they realize they have the prophesied Red Veil, not only do they feel the lust for each other, but they find that it means so much! And not everyone is happy that this occurrence is happening. Kidnappings, battles, passionate love scenes and sacrifice all takes place within Descent of Blood. I wish the book was longer, it could have gone on for at least 100 more pages and I wanted to see all things come to fruition.

I really enjoyed the various creatures that Ms. Marx used. There are several types of vampires - my favorite being the Nosferatu who were just like the old black and white movie Nosferatu. There are wraiths and mixed-breeds and each have a purpose and a history. She has clearly and flawlessly constructed a complex and lush story. The story began many years ago with Meridian's ancestors and because of the events that took place will have repercussions throughout the future. This is an excellent novel - one that I will keep on my shelves forever. I recommend to anyone who enjoys the Gothics, Paranormal Romance and Historical Fiction.

After reading the Prequel, Descent of Blood and loving every moment of it, I knew I had to read Ascent of Blood. The book is no longer in a historical setting and takes place in Wales circa 1990. Sebastian Pearce, son of Severian Pearce and Meridian, is looking for someone who he can breed with. Even though the daughters of Severian were used to breed and create more vampires, it has been nearly 500 years and there are very few women capable of breeding with the immortals in this day and age. When Sebastian comes across a young woman who could be a possible mate, he is smacked with the same attraction that his father once felt for his mother. Everleigh, like Meridian, doesn't have a blood bouquet which signifies her rare lineage and they have connected by The Red Veil. She, however, is already with child - and was impregnated by an immortal.

I really disliked Sebastian through a great deal of Ascent of Blood. He is arrogant and has a double standard when it comes to a person's virtue. He is repulsed by Everleigh but still longs for her. And then there is Everleigh, a modern American woman who is outspoken and also dislikes Sebastian. The back and forth banter between them is hilarious. I love that he can hear her thoughts and dreams - which because of the Red Veil are of a rather risque nature. But despite the fact that he wants nothing to do with her, he must keep her safe and near him so he doesn't succumb to the madness that happens when The Red Veil is denied. Then we have Sebastian's succubus girlfriend/plaything who keeps trying to kill Everleigh because she is a threat. I found the triangle to be very amusing. When a huge scandal revealed and an enemy does something unforgivable to Everleigh and Sebastian's family, the fangs come out!

I found Ascent of Blood to be funny, suspenseful, and the plot twists were exciting and surprising. I liked that there are many reoccurring characters from Descent of Blood. I found the histories that are interjected about each supernatural race significant and fascinating. They brought the past and the present together and brought back a character I missed. I also liked that the books were not too similar and were not just a retelling of the story just with different characters. Elizabeth Marx's storytelling had me hooked from the very beginning and I was never disappointed. I am a huge fan of and advocate for independent authors and books like this are the reason why. The writing is exceptional and the concepts are unique and not cookie-cutter creations. Ascent of Blood has touches of Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance which brought the story into the modern era while still retaining the essence of the Historical novel. I stayed up all night reading this book and can't wait until I hear news about book two!

I have been wanting to read this book since I first saw it on Amazon over six months ago and saw all the hype surrounding the book. I even bought my own copy, but never quite got around to reading it, so I jumped at the chance to do the book tour.  The first thing that caught my eye was that is was about a Wiccan girl. I love books about Wicca, witches, and magic in general and I was not disappointed with Hamilton's The Forever Girl. And the cover - or covers - as this is the revised version, were both beautifully Gothic and I am a sucker for pretty covers.

Sophia Parsons is a pretty normal girl for a 22 year old who just graduated college and moved back home. That is unless you count the fact that she is a Wiccan in a town full of Christian zealots who keep harassing her - one of whom is her own mother- and the fact that she hears a constant buzzing/hissing sound that may or may not be part of a family curse, yeah completely normal. After trying to banish the incessant noise in her head with a spell that went wrong, she now hears whispers and sometimes clear voices. Hoping to get rid of the affliction she goes to a club with her friend Ivory in hopes of meeting a guy that might have a book that has a spell that will help. What she finds however, is more trouble than she even knew existed.

The characters were all interesting and each had their own story to tell. Even Sophia's mother, albeit not my favorite person, had a history and issues that made her human. Ivory is a particularly notable character. There is so much to her and there is a whole chapter telling the reader her past which is beautiful yet painful. Sophia is a conundrum. She is able to keep her cool in the face of evil Mrs. Franklin and the constant ostracism and has a peace about her that fits well with her Wiccan beliefs. On the other hand, she is constantly doubting herself and sometimes is downright lost. She is haunted by her past and present and can't seem to find her foothold in this new world.

Now for the romance. Charles, the love interest, started out as a real jerk. But he turned out to be an okay guy and really hot! The relationship between Sophia and Charles is one that is not rushed. Their intimacy is slow-building and they are not codependent as so many literary couples are. I like that they allow each other to be who they are and make their own choices. However, I will say that it was nerve wracking to see whether or not they would finally really get together as a couple and give in to their feelings for each other. I wanted to see more romance and it was very modest and restrained.

I applaud the author for her world building skills. While this is fiction, the author obviously did a lot of research to create authentic histories and believable story lines. The traditional paranormal creatures have been given a makeover and she has given a different view on what it means to be an Immortal. Vampires, shape-shifters, and witches all have a very unique history that involves the basic elements: Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Spirit. I also love symbolism used in The Forever Girl, especially the tie-in to the Salem Witch Trials and how it mirrors Sophia's experiences in modern times. I liked how Ms. Hamilton handled religion, and its abuses, while still maintaining the idea that everyone has the right to their own beliefs and not painting all of one belief systems bad because of the abusers.

Overall, I loved The Forever Girl and am excited to see the progression of the story. Ms. Hamilton's writing is beautiful and descriptive and puts you right into Sophia's shoes. I can't wait to read the next book which will be from another character's perspective. I do have the short novella, Her Sweetest Downfall, up next on my Kindle though! Ms. Hamilton is a talented writer and I found the book very readable without any errors that I could find. This book is a must read for fans of Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy.

The Deal

MY STOMACH CLENCHED as I sensed the vampire’s approach. He was close. So close I could feel the thrum of his power vibrating along my skin. The hairs on the back of my neck rose, and I knew if I was going to use my power for defense, then I needed to bring it forth now. I closed my eyes, forcing myself to breathe as deeply as I could—which thankfully had gotten easier with practice. I focused on the energy inside me, willing it to the surface, and as I felt it swelling, building like an approaching storm, I threw out my hand, gripped Stone’s shirtsleeve, and urged him to the floor. “Get down! He’s here!”

Stone raked me with a look that told me he was not too pleased, but then fear swept over his face when he realized just how little time we had.

The wooden door to the pub suddenly burst open—bits of wood and dust raining down from the force. Even though Stone should’ve cowered behind me—since his gift of reading blood wasn’t something he could fight with—somehow he’d found some bravery and boldly stood by my side. Though I appreciated it, I didn’t like it, and desperately wished he had listened to me. But I couldn’t think about that and call forth the fire within me at the same time. So I pushed Stone to the back of my mind with the silent promise of dealing with him later. Then I returned my attention to the power building inside me. One last deep breath and my heart shuddered to life inside my chest, making a rhythmic pattern with my faux breathing. A tingling warmth spread from head to toe, then settled on my awaiting hands. Seconds later, there was a glowing orb of fire (about the size of a basketball) cupped inside my palms. And just as the vampire appeared through the settling fog, I called out, “Not another step, Tristan, or it will be your last!”

“I think you should reconsider your threat,” Tristan shot back. “We are on the same side.”

That I sincerely doubted, but I knew killing a member of the Head Council would definitely put me on the “Most Wanted” list. Which I might already be on, since I’d helped the human this vampire was here to claim escape.

“She’s not bluffing!” Stone said through a snarl. I wanted to glare him into silence, but I refused to take my eyes off of the vampire standing in the broken doorway, wearing a black Armani-looking suit—now lightly covered with dust. It was a custom for all members of the Head Council to wear black suits, but each of them would wear shoes and an undershirt of their own choosing. I guess it was a way to express their individual personalities. Yet this one seemed to express himself through his spiked, platinum blond hair, not the basic black undershirt and matching boots—which were much more boring compared to what I’d seen a few of the other Council members wearing. But this vampire was far from boring. He was a tracker for the Council—one of the best hunters on earth. And he was after my human boyfriend.

My Thoughts:
Amish life and vampires?? Ummm....Hell Yes! I have to say that I am completely in love with this book. Laura Bickle has brought the dystopian genre, vampires, and the Amish together in an incredible and thrilling book. But be forewarned, there is a lot of gore and it is not for the weak! The basis is given in the synopsis above, but I will add a few tidbits. The Amish, or Plain Folk as they refer to themselves are very different from the Outside or English world. Katie has to sneaks things like comic books and Coca Cola - both of which is unacceptable in her world. Katie is a fantastic character and is what makes this book great. She is obstinate, defiant, and yet has more backbone and morals than those of her community.

When the end of the world is upon them, the Elders close the gates - no one in and no one out. Something is happening outside, something that is killing people off in droves. No one knows what is really going on. When an Outsider is found just beyond the gates Katie saves his life by invoking "Gelassenheit" or God's will and saves him from being put down. She even goes as far as sneaking around and bringing him to her barn and hiding him. Then when she needs to get him (Alex) antibiotics desperately, Katie leaves and encounters the very thing that is tearing the world down. Vampires. And not your sparkly, brooding, sexy vampires; they are the 30 Day's of Night vampires who kill without remorse and are evil incarnate.

I could not put this book down. I enjoyed reading and learning about the Amish culture as well as some of the more fictional aspects of the book. I really liked the inclusion the Hexenmeister - or Amish wizard/witch. They are basically there to put markings on buildings to protect them or bring about fertility or a good harvest. Not many Ordnungs use them anymore so this showed just how strict and old school this community was. As for the more horrific parts of the book, well I have to say that the image of a pack of feral vampire cheerleaders is a favorite for me. The vampires are creeptastic and had me turning on my lights while reading about them.

Laura Bickle is a great storyteller and was able to bring in some difficult subjects with ease. She wove religion and faith together in a way that made me think and had the characters thinking about what is right and true and what that meant to them at what might be the end of the world. There is also a bit of romance for those who can't live without it, but it is not the overall theme. The book is over 300 pages, which is a little longer than some young adult books though it was paced well. There were times in the beginning where I wanted more, but the background and information was all there for a purpose. I am ecstatic that there will be a second book. It could stand alone with the ending that it has, but I am happy to know that we will be seeing more of Katie.

Mrs. Parsall bit back a sob. "Well it seems as if God's left the building, and we're left to our own devices."
